On the Hook by Rea Keech

This is a solid, if not spectacular, cozy that feels as if it's not going to play by the rules that so many cozy mystery lovers expect to come across. The setting is rich, and the characters utterly believable, which in a way is one of the issues I had with the book. I read cozys for the crazy protagonists living in a crazy setting. This was an utterly human feeling characters living in an utterly realistic setting, which might well appeal to most readers, but didn't quite land for me a significant portion of way.
There's some simplistic happenings that don't quite match up, and more than a few areas where I wanted to see more behind the curtain but never quite got to. It shouldn't sound like I hate this book, though. I enjoyed the writing quite a bit, and the tangles of the story almost always worked, even when I saw them coming a mile down the road. The ending was satisfying, and I'd probably give a series another read. It's a strong start and a good discovery of a new writer through Net Galley. Verdict: give it a try! The less tied you are to Cozys, the more you're likely to enjoy it. |
